Mid Year Audit
Now that we’re at the halfway point of the year it’s a good idea to take some time to check in on everything. And this doesn’t just apply to your business or professional goals, it’s also about checking in on every aspect of your life.
So grab a coffee, sit down, turn off the phone and use the following as a quick guide to get you thinking.
If you set some goals at the start of the year then it’s time to check in on the results so far. Are you on track towards your goals or do you need to rework or replace some of your strategies? And if you started with one particular goal but have since discovered that it’s actually not something you want after all feel free to replace it!
Your time management
Those new year resolutions to be more effective with your time can often disappear quickly when we start to get into the year. Do you need to get back on track with a daily schedule, have you said yes to too many things, do you need to reduce your commitments, are you prioritising your time effectively or simply reacting to items as they arise? Consider if your time is being spent on the activities that will help achieve your goals as well as in the areas important to you (such as family and lifestyle).
Around this time of year the initial enthusiasm after the Xmas holidays has started to wane and you’re probably feeling ready for a break. When you’re stressed with workload or maybe frustrated with your progress so far your health and wellbeing can start to suffer (as this is when we often don’t take the time to look after ourselves properly). Are you eating healthy, exercising regularly, relaxing periodically and taking care of your physical health or is it about time that you did? Taking care of yourself physically will help ensure you’re in tip top condition to achieve your goals and enjoy your life.
The year can’t all be about working hard, it needs to be enjoyable too! And maybe when you set your goals at the start of the year you forgot to include the things you enjoy doing or find fulfilling. Is it ages since you went fishing, went to the theatre, read a good book or took a short trip with friends? Or maybe you want to join a community group or contribute in some way to a charity. Whatever interests are important to you make sure they’re included in your plans.
Everyone needs a break periodically to recharge their batteries. It can also make everything else easier too when you have something to look forward to. Is your next holiday booked in (even if it’s just a weekend away)? If not then it’s time to book it in now.
Your support network
When life gets tough it pays to have a supportive network around you and when life is good being able to share this with the same type of people makes it doubly enjoyable. Are you spending enough time with the important people in your life and making sure that you surround yourself with people who lift you up and make you feel like you can conquer the world? Or is it time to expand your social networks?
Is your lifestyle enjoyable, relaxing and fulfilling or does it just stress you out? Sometimes we can fall into a certain lifestyle rather than taking the time to consciously design it for ourselves. Maybe where you’re living doesn’t suit you because you have to battle the traffic every day to work, maybe it’s time to downsize or declutter your home to free yourself up from some belongings or too much household maintenance, maybe it’s time to start sorting out your personal finances and saving for something important or maybe you just need some extra help like a cleaner or a food delivery service to make your life easier. Take some time to think about what needs to be in your lifestyle to make you happy.
Your professional life
There’s no rule that says you have to stay in the same business or the same career forever and maybe it’s time to start thinking about a new phase? Have you’ve been in the same role for a long time and feel in need of a new challenge? Do you want to work overseas, achieve a new qualification, learn new skills, start a new business or find a way to retire early? Anything is possible if you set your mind to it and there is a world full of possibilities – what do you want to do next?
A mid year audit is a valuable part of working towards achieving your yearly goals as it’s a chance to review, rework (as needed) and reboot your enthusiasm levels for the second half of the year. And in doing this exercise too you might also discover something new about yourself or a new path ahead for the rest of the year!
