Stay Focused on Your Plan
Now that the holidays are over and we’re into the new year, it’s time to put your new year’s plan into action.
No matter how inspiring your goals are or how thoroughly you’ve planned your strategies, it can be easy to get off track when everyday life starts to get in the way. One of your biggest challenges ahead will be staying focused.
So what can help you stay focused on your plan in the year ahead?
Goals need to be prioritised and time scheduled for them in your diary. If you’re asked to take on (or feel the need to take on) anything else then be aware this could delay your progress, so be careful about what you choose to do. It’s likely there will be important items throughout the year that will need your attention but don’t allow these to send you off track. Make sure you focus back in on your goals as soon as you’ve dealt with them. Having reminders in your diary to work on your goals will help with this.
A new year’s plan (even when it’s very exciting and well thought out) can sometimes end up on a shelf gathering dust or hidden away on your computer. Keep your plan handy at all times to remind you of your focus areas for the year. Pin it up in your office, on the fridge, in your diary or set your goals as the wallpaper on your phone and/or computer.
A plan should adjust as you go along according to your progress. Sometimes you’ll move faster than planned and will be able to increase what you want to achieve or adjust a strategy when it’s not working. Working on your plan regularly will keep you focused on it and moving forward in the right direction.
A plan’s success is measured by what it achieves so make sure you track your progress. This will allow you to adjust any strategies as needed and keep you inspired as you witness yourself achieving key milestones. Staying inspired by the progress of your goals will help you stay focused on them.
Some people like to keep their plan private, others find that sharing it with others inspires them further. Objective input and support can also provide new insight and ideas and help you stay on track. When you’re aiming to achieve goals anything that could help is worthwhile exploring, so consider sharing your plan with someone you trust.
In order to have the energy to stay focused you also need schedule time for your brain to switch off and take a break. Book time every week to relax and switch off from your plan so that you have the mental and physical energy to stay focused for the longer term and achieve your goals.
There are two important stages to a successful plan. One is choosing inspiring goals, considering everything carefully, setting the right strategies and putting the plan into action. The second part (and just as importantly) is ensuring that you stay focused throughout the process so that you can achieve what’s in your plan. Make sure you don’t miss this important second stage of goal setting to support your plan’s success. Now go work on that plan and good luck with it!
